The pasillo is the national music of Ecuador. It began in the 19th century in New Granada. Musicians play the pasillo on the guitar. There are usually two guitars. One is a special kind of guitar called a requinto. The first songs were about sadness and love. Pasillos became popular in the Ecuadorian War of Independence (1820–1822) when the musicians sang about people’s bravery. In 1930, the famous song Guayaquil de mis amores started a different style of pasillo. Musicians started to write songs about the beauty of Ecuador and its towns and cities. Today, musicians write pasillos about many different subjects. Songs from the coast are happier and songs from the mountains are sadder.
